Ayorou, Niger 🇳🇪

This Songhai old town stands on an eponymous island in the River Niger. It is known for its animal market and wildlife including Hippopotamuses and Birds. This town was founded by Sonni Baru after he was overthrown as the Emperor of the Songhai Empire.

The Songhai languages, natively known collectively as the "Ayneha" languages are a group of closely related dialects centred on the middle stretches of the Niger River in West Africa. The Songhai languages are ssumed to constitute the primary branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family.  With more than four million speakers, Zarma is easily the widely spoken dialect followed by Songhoyboro Ciine and Koyraboro Senni (Gao dialect). Some Songhay languages have little to no mutual intelligibility between each other. For example, Koyraboro Senni, spoken in Gao, is unintelligible to speakers of Zarma in Niger. However, Songhoyboro Ciine, Zarma, and Dendi have high mutual intelligibility within Niger. ​ An historical event took place yesterday evening at the Sakasaka area in Tamale between the Greater Accra Zabarma Chief(Sarki Alhaji Pro Umar Tanko) and the Zabarma Community In Tamale. It  was a moment full of fruitful interactions and majority of the Zabarma people were there in their numbers to witness the awesome presentation of  His Royal Highness. It was also a golden opportunity for some of the people especially those who have always wanted to meet His Royal Highness in person. The Imam of the Zabarma Community in Tamale played a key role during the organization of the program. They took the opportunity to express their concerns about their situation in this region with regards to the registration of Identity Cards because they have always been victims of ethnocentrism.
