The Greater Accra Zabarma Chief(Sarki Alhaji Pro Umar Tanko) Steals The Show At This Year’s Historic “Damba Festival” In Tamale
The Damba festival is celebrated by the chiefs and peoples of the Northern, Savanna, North East and Upper West Regions of Ghana. The name Damba is in Dagbani and the festival is celebrated in the Dagomba lunar month of Damba, corresponding to the third month of the Islamic calendar, Rabia al-Awwal. Damba is celebrated to mark the birth and naming of Muhammad, but the actual content of the celebration is a glorification of the chieftaincy, not specific Islamic motifs. People from the diaspora usually come home during this occasion.
This year’s Damba Festival was full of excitement as the Greater Accra Zabarma Chief Sarki Pro Umar Tanko honored the invitation of the newly enskinned “TUGU YEPALSI NAA” , “GULKPE NAA” and “YOO NAA”. The “TUGU YEPALSI PALACE “ was his first destination were His Royal Highness was warmly welcomed by the “TUGU YEPALSI NAA” Chief Alhaji Aminu Mobila together with a large number of crowd drumming, singing and dancing. His presence together with his entourage completely caught the attention of the crowd. His Royal Highness upon customary demands was given a Royal treatment together with series of gun salutes by their “SAPASHINI “ as a sign of respect and the ancient link between the ancestors of the Zabarma people and the northern tribes.
“GULPKE NAA PALACE” was the next destination as part of the daily activities. Immediately His Royal Highness got there with his entourage, the massive crowd rushed closer to his vehicle in different styles. As the security were controlling the large crowd, It took His Royal Highness close to 30minutes to be able to come to step out of his car. Everyone wanted to set their eyes on the Greater Accra Zabarma Chief upon hearing his arrival. The “GULKPE NAA” Chief Alhassan Mahama was full of joy as they both exchanged pleasantries as a sign of appreciation and respect. There were countless gun salutes by the “SAPASHINI” which signifies the presence of a great personality. His positive impact was much hailed by the “GULPKE NAA” and his kinsmen.
“YOO BARIGU PALACE” was the final destination of the Greater Accra Zabarma Chief to partake in series of ongoing activities at the “Damba Festival”.“Rice Picking Ceremony “ Horse riding across the length and breath of Savulugu township with the king's and war lords on beautifully decorated horses with Yoo Naa's wife leading carrying water to greet the Imam and his deputy, Zamfara Chief, Butcher's Chief, and some elders of the community.That’s exactly where “Damba” starts. On arrival at the palace on foot amidst dancing and firing of guns by the “SAPASHINI “ as a means of joy and also to pacify their ancestors. In attendance was His Royal Highness the Greater Accra Zabarma Chief Sarki Alhaji Pro Umar Tanko , the MP for Savelugu Hon Jacob Iddriss Abdullai, MCE of Savelugu Hajia Ayishatu Seidu , Coordinating Director Hon Issaka Braimah Basintale and many more. Lots of cultural displays. The Greater Accra Zabarma Chief also exhibited his “Damba” skills. The Chiefs and people of the Northern Region were in good spirit and gave His Royal Highness their massive support to his transformation agenda for the Zabarma Community in Tamale. As it stands now they are willing to surprise the Greater Accra Zabarma Chief with a “HUGE TITTLE” which has not been disclosed yet. They also continued to rally behind him to help create a more suitable environment for the Zabarma people to promote peaceful coexistence and enhance bilateral relations among the people.
